White Things
Ginza Kyubido Gallery, Tokyo
2004

We are not able to look on war and terrorism unconcernedly with indifference since 9.11 in NY after highly consuming 90's was over. Yet my daily life in Japan has been continuing in such a insecure atmosphere. "White Things" series is a group of paintings about white objects around myself. I feel that white reflects the aspect of the insecure atmosphere of our daily lives since highly consuming 90's was over and the long depression and the shadow of wars and terrorism came to the front because the color reminds me not only fresh and clean image but also death or frantic image as well. The image of the Milk Bar in " Clockwork Orange" directed by S. Kubric is a perfect example. Alex and his cruel fellows hung around the bar where is totally furnished in white. Actually the color has been used for many electric devices lately. Painting white is also challenging as a painter because white is a color but not like any other colors.

I painted "Brutal Aibo" and "Starving Aibo" which of these are a bloodthirsty and a starved electric doggie robots. How do you think if you go back your home and your faithful doggie robot became crazy and attacks you or pigs your foods out? Both of them is an irony of a fact that lives of people today are controlled by machines in greater or lesser.

"White Lily" which is a painting of a flower is also nationalistic symbol of war time for me because the background of Japanese prime minister Junichi Koizumi when he makes TV speech is always lilies on the one side and Japanese national flag on the other side. Also I painted blue flame oil heater. There is a scene of bombing image in the blue flame which was inspired by a news photograph. There was an Iraqi family who was burned out of their home and saved their small household effects which includes the oil heater in the photograph.

On the other hand, there are many music related works because music is a passion of my life and inspires me a lot when I make art works. For example, I painted EMINEM who is a white guy who does rap music which supposed to be black music. Also I dedicated a work called " My White Adidas (Walk this way) " for Jam Master Jay who was a member of RUM DMC, shot and passed away in two years ago in Queens. Their trademark was Adidas. I heard that the criminal hasn't been arrested since then.
